What is tepal flower?

A tepal refers to an undifferentiated floral structure that can take on the appearance of either a petal or a sepal. In tepal flowers, there is no clear distinction between petals and sepals. The term tepal is commonly used to describe the perianth of flowers in various families, such as lilies, tulips, and hyacinths. Tepal flowers can have anywhere from two to many tepals and can range in color from white to deep blue or red. The term tepal is useful because it allows for describing flower structures that do not fit the typical petal-sepal dichotomy.
